Equivalent to AS Level

Extended Project provides students with an exciting opportunity to pursue an area of research based on their own academic interests and aspirations. Aside from the benefits it can provide to a student’s skills base and career development, many top universities now favour the qualification as a means of strengthening an application to higher education.

The aim of the extended project is to:

Cultivate critical, reflective and independent learners.

Develop and apply decision making and problem solving skills.

Extend skills in planning, research, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and presentation.

Develop and apply skills creatively; demonstrating initiative and enterprise.

Course Content

The course is split into taught and supervised elements. Initially, students will develop the skills they will require to complete the project, on a three month preparatory course. These include the use of potential sources and how to prepare a good questionnaire, as well as developing interview and presentation skills.

On completion of this, they have one to one interviews to discuss their project proposal, and are assigned a teacher to act as project supervisor to oversee its completion.

Students’ choice of project fits into one of four categories:

1. Dissertation

2. Investigation

3. Artefact

4. Performance

What one pursues is limited to their imagination and resources. For this reason, students benefit from being surrounded by other passionate and motivated individuals in groups associated with their choice.
